A Place for Culture is designed to deepen understanding of and foster respectful engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. Grounded in the principles of cultural responsiveness, the program translates theory into practical application by equipping participants with essential knowledge and skills. Theoretical foundations underscore the significance of cultural awareness and sensitivity in educational and community contexts. Participants will explore Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ ways of knowing, being and doing, emphasising the importance of developing cultural competency in their own professional and personal interactions. By promoting cultural responsiveness, the program empowers participants to build meaningful connections and partnerships, contributing to reconciliation and fostering positive change. The course aligns closely with theoretical frameworks, highlighting cultural identity, self-determination and the impact of historical and contemporary factors on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

As an early childhood educator or service provider, you are vital in shaping inclusive and culturally responsive learning environments. Throughout the program, you will continue to deepen your understanding of the strengths of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and the diverse ways in which we live and express our cultures. Recognising that each community has its own unique context, you will explore some of the shared cultural values and how these shape Aboriginal ways of knowing, being and doing—connecting these insights with the fundamentals of the Early Years Learning Framework (V2.0) (AGDE, 2022), ‘belonging, being and becoming’ (p. 6). Opportunities are provided to reflect on the importance of connecting and building meaningful relationships within local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to better understand the diversity of cultures and perspectives and families’ aspirations for their children’s early learning experience. Across the program, you will consider your role as an educator supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and how you value their cultural identities and strengths while considering how critical reflection and cultural responsiveness can guide your work. You will explore how your work contributes to reconciliation and prepare for the next steps of your cultural journey.
